Remembering and feeling grateful

This week we’re remembering the terrible fire that almost destroyed The Ingham Swan during the night of 10th/11th September 2017 as much of the 14th Century thatched building sadly went up in flames. The roof took the brunt of the damage and more than 45 brave firefighters fought the blaze after a nearby resident raised the alarm at 2am.  Fire crews from Stalham, Martham, Wroxham, North Walsham, Sprowston and Mundesley attended using specialist equipment such as the Aerial Ladder from Great Yarmouth and Water Carrier from Hethersett.  Crews remained on site throughout the day and the Incident Commander referred to it as a ‘scene of utter devastation’. 

 We received many, many hundreds of messages, emails, tweets, Facebook posts and Instagram comments offering support which helped lift the spirits of the whole team and reinforced our determination to rebuild. 

For almost 18 months builders and craftsmen worked to painstakingly rebuild the historic 14th Century Grade II Listed building, offering us a unique opportunity to re-design the interiors, install new seating and re-build the bar whilst preserving the character.  We also created a brand-new purpose-built kitchen – carefully designed to our own exacting standards and bringing in new technology and we were so excited to finally re-open in March 2019. 

  Now, 5 years on, we reflect and remember that terrible night and feel so grateful that The Ingham Swan is as busy and as much loved as ever by you - our customers and our friends.
